Chipload, reference chipload, and chip thickness

Are there "standard" definitions for chipload, reference chipload, and chip thickness? How do they differ?

Hi, There is no "standard definition" any where. I guess i should create a help article for that. Chipload - Advancement of the cutter per tooth per revolution. Reference chipload - the initial chip load that was pulled from the data base before adjustments. Chip Thickness - the actual measurable thickness of the chip. You may find this article useful: https://zero-divide.net/?&article_id=4413 Regards.

Thanks! Do tool manufacturers use the same definition of Chip Load (one solely dependent on feed rate, spindle speed, and number of cutter flutes) for their speeds and feeds recommendations? Is that the most commonly accepted definiton? I understand chip thickness, but not "Reference Chipload"

Yes, Manufacturers definition of chip load is the same. "Reference chip load" = Manufacturer Chip load before applying different compensations. IE: most manufacturers suggest 0.0025ipt. that is showing up within the app as Reference Chip Load. Then HSMAdvisor does its magic and determine that the tool can feed much faster and recommends the Chip Load = 0.005". This is why you often see different Reference Chip Load different from the resulting Chip Load
