MasterCAM x9 Lesson: Simple Contouring. Speeds and Feeds, Depth of Cut

December 18, 2015, 12:11 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

I personally use HSMAdvisor at work every day and trust its results 100%

I have to say my program now knows about machining more than i do. I certainly can not remember cutting speeds and feeds, reduction factors, depth of cut and a ton of other information for every material I have ever cut.

Now add to that the various possible combinations of tool/material/coating and it becomes a no brainier, that a good speed and feed calculator like HSMAdvisor saves a ton of time and money by improving your tool life and productivity.

It is not only good for HSM (High Speed Machining) but also for general machining, drilling tapping, you name it.

The algorithms it employs are far superior to what other calculators are using. Take for example the real-time depth of cut/deflection optimization, that other calculators do in a separate window and take a few seconds to complete.

Here is a quick video lesson where i show the steps involved in creating a simple contouring toolpath in MasterCam x9:

And here is the video of machining the actual part:

Lessson 3: CNC Canned Cycles, Drilling, Tapping, Reaming and Boring Cycles

September 20, 2015, 2:49 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

Canned cycles are used every time we need to drill, ream or tap holes on our CNC machine

Standard Fanuc G-Code language supports more than a dozen canned cycles.

The most common cycles that will cover 99.9% of your g-Code CNC programming work are:

G-Code Name Motion Style
G81 Standard Drilling Feed-In, Rapid-Out
G83 Deep Hole Peck Drilling Incremental Feed-In by Peck Distance, Rapid Out, Repeat
G84 Right Hand Tapping Feed-In,Reverse Spindle, Feed-Out
G85 Reaming/Boring Feed-In, Feed Out

Subsequent holes

You can drill additional holes After your canned cycle has been initiated.
Any line with X Y position will be treated as another hole position.

Each position can have its own Retract value, feed rate and retract height modifier.

G80 - Canned Cycle Cancel Code

After all the holes of the canned cycle have been drilled, it is required to call G80 code in order to cancel the current cycle.

HSMAdvisor v1.146 released

March 29, 2015, 9:08 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

We have one major feature in this release and a lot of small improvements:

Starting form this update every HSMAdvisor installer and executable file will be digitally signed.
This will keep both your IT guy and your Antivirus Program happy.

I made a decision to invest into signing my executables because users were complaining about AV programs like Norton shutting down my software.

You can download the latest version in our downloads section

What's New:

  • Digital signing added to the executable files
  • Maximum Tapping RPM added to the Machine Definition dialog to recognize the fact that tapping speed is often a lot smaller than the maximum spindle speed available on most machines.

Improvements:

  • Major work is being done to translate HSMAdvisor to other languages
  • Typos fixed all over the place
  • Machine Definition dialog functions improved
  • Thread Milling tool type now includes DOC and WOC fields
  • Cutting speeds for several materials have been adjusted
  • Fixed condition where restoring the window in "Narrow" mode would cause controls to disappear until Maximize button was pressed
  • Tool drop-down box now better scales and crops extra-long values to make room for all columns

Improved HSMAdvisor 0.740

February 24, 2014, 1:18 am by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

This update is mainly a bug fix and has some usability improvements.

New Things

  • Persistence in Threads Tab
Now Threads Page will stay the way you left it when you shut down the program
  • Persistence in column selection for Drill Chart for both the Treads Page and Tap Tool on FSWizard Page as well.
  • Capture Wizard can now capture target windows with dynamic controls. (Still working on SprutCAM integration profile that required this feature)

Fixed and Improved things

  • Tapping tools had a bug in metric mode. Now it is fixed
  • Text color for selected row in myCut Database page is now white on blue background. Which makes things easier to see.
  • Capture Wizard is now a lot faster and should be less prone to hang ups.
  • Improved Machine Limits behavior
Power Overload now causes feedrate to reduce.

FSWizard is now available on iOS and Android

Please try the Free FSWizard Lite first to confirm your device capability.
Also huge thanks to those who go through the trouble and leave a review.
Good reviews mean more sales and more incentive for me to further improve on this app.

FSWizard Lite and FSWizard PRO are iPhone/Android machinist calculators that do not require internet connection.
PRO version has all the latest material lists and speed and feed technology.

Lite version has all the same features, but it only has tool steel, mild steel and aluminum in its material list. It still has all the tool types and tool materials found in online and standalone versions
Both Lite and Pro  versions have unlocked tapping data.

Lite versions have limited geometry calculators.

This app is intended not to replace but to complement my much more powerful standalone Windows application called HSMAdvisor.

HSMAdvisor 0.023 Has been released

April 7, 2013, 10:26 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

This release is a major step forward.
We are starting to wander away from just Speeds and Feeds calculator part of the project.

Version 0.022 was a little buggy.

All reported and known bugs have been fixed.

New update version is 0.023

New features:

  • Threads page: You can now get thread cutting and tapping data for most popular threads in north America (UNC/UNF/ISO).
The list of supported threads and features will grow according to necessity and user feedback.
  • Machine Profiles now have 2 new buttons: Clone and Import.
Clone button simply copies selected machine definition with a different name.
Import button is needed to be able to update/add machine definitions from default machine list. As users modify and customize their Machine List, thay are now able to add machine definitions hassle-free from default_machines.xml file that is supplied with every update.

Bugs Fixed:

  • Sticky Ball nose check box

  • Max HP improperly rounded

Additions:

  • Thanks to Greg Jackson and Matt Doeppers from Tormach i was able to create Horse Power/RPM curves for Tormach PCNC770 and PCNC1100 models (if you install over previous version, you can use import function to add those machines to the list)

Shop-made indexing fixture

September 27, 2012, 11:32 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

Needed to do alot of side drilling/milling/tapping on our moulds lately.

So I quickly designed and whipped up this custom indexing fixture that allows me to mount almost anything to it.

Face plate has several tooling dowel holes on front side to locate work piece.
On the back of face plate there are 36 3/8 dia reamed holes spaced 10 Degree apart.

Housing has a big 5.0"Dia pocket in the front into which the face plate's hub fits in with 0.001" clearance
Housing also has corresponding 3/8dia reamed holes spaced apart 9 degrees. This allows me to index the face plate with 1 degree increment.

Design time:2 hours, Machining time: 2 hours.
