Mind the Gap!

March 29, 2016, 3:22 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

Don't you hate when "that guy" cuts your stock a little too short?

Holding on to just 0.060" here. The part is 1.5" tall made out of 4140, which helps it stay in place and not collapse under machining pressure. Pretty sure it would have moved if it was made out of mild steel.

PS. Did I eay I love those CR vise? I do. Can't lift that jaw with a lift truck.

FSWizard:Mobile 1.47

March 29, 2016, 8:43 am by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

There have been reports of troubles our FSWizard users were having after updating to Android 6.0

I issued some hotfixes before but they did not help.

So I would like to announce that with the latest update all the problems have been fixed. There were also minor updates in the UI, but nothing major.

Cheers!

Jazzed-up Registration Module!

March 29, 2016, 7:59 am by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

The number of this site's registered members is approaching 5000 and I am more and more often receiving requests to reset someone's password because they forgot it.

See, up until now there was no way for a user to reset his pass on his own. So I had to do it.

Being as lazy as I am (when it comes to petty chores) I have revamped our registration module.

You can now Register, Login, Forget your Password and Reset it in one convenient place.

Just go to Sign In menu option.

Oh, if you want to reset your pass you need to provide the email address, you used to register. And it needs to be valid, because it is where your new pass will be sent to!

Cheers!

Happy Easter and have a Good Long Weeken

Does it annoy you when the customer changes the material type all of a sudden?

March 21, 2016, 11:16 am by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

It does not annoy me anymore!

Originally this part was programmed for and machined in 6061 aluminum, but when production run came, material was changed to HRS and then to SPS (4140).

Luckily reprogramming using HSMAdvisor hook for MasterCAM is a bliss.

Mere 5 minutes and all speeds, feeds, depths of cut, etc. were changed to safe and productive values.

Notepad++: Absolutely Free G-Code Editor With Code Highlighting

March 20, 2016, 3:28 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)
NPPGcodeLang3.png

Quite often I see people asking which text editors others use to work with their G-Code.

Some even suggest paid ones.

I am using a free general-purpose advanced text editor called Notepad++.

It is so flexible, it can recognize the language you are working with and turn on the language-specific highlighting for even the G-Code.

I created my own Language profile for it. It is attached to this article so that everyone can download it.

Below is how you can apply this language profile to turn on g-code highlighting:

HSMAdvisor Heads UP

March 13, 2016, 11:02 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

I just have to tell.

I know, I know I should not. But I am working on a very cool feature right now and I am extremely happy and proud with how well it comes together.

Okay. I can tell you that it has a word "Cloud" in it and that I have VERY high hopes for it.....Once fully implemented it will unite all of our Speeds and Feeds products in a huge way.

Keep tuned in. Closed testing is about to start very soon.

If you would like to participate in something groundbreaking and new, shoot me an email!

Only license holders can apply, though. I don't want it to leak too early.

Expanding Mandrel with Outside Support

Being a CNC Machinist/Programmer is sometimes more than simply creating a program and machining the actual part, often times it is about creating efficient and accurate fixturing.

In this little project:

I had to machine rectangular cut-outs and drill holes through an already-turned steel ring. Then I had to part each ring to 4 equal pieces.

There were about 100 such rings that worked out to 400 pieces in total.

After drilling holes on an indexer I had to machine a fixture to hold my part through 2 remaining set-ups.

First half of the fixture consists of the expanding mandrel:

The work-piece would be mounted on it like so. A hole on the side is used to properly position it:

Turner - Modeler

Being a professional CNC Machinist myself with a good manual background I often find myself watching various machining videos and blogs.

Unlike others I do not often share somebody-else's work, I could just not walk past this one and not tell everybody how great I think this is....

This story was posted on "Russian reddit" and here is the direct translation of the author's post:

Quote:
We have a mechanic/installer at our work. He used to be a lathe machinist on a previous job and had a hobby - created a model copy of KrAZ-255B military truck. Right now he does not have time to work on it but is planning to return to it once he has more time on his hands.

Here is the mid-way result of his....art!

Lets begin with tyres. Vladimir (guy's name) decided to create the mould to make the rubber tyres himself. Here it is:

Here are the tyres he made with it. Beautiful aren't they?

He also made little differentials. Housings, gears. Everything made himself:

The New Help Category: Tool Database & Inventory

February 24, 2016, 10:41 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)
ToolDatabaseTabAnnotated.PNG

Being as vast and as complex as it is HSMAdvisor Tool Database may seem overwhelming for many users despite all the benefits of using it.

To address this issue I have just added a new category to our HSMAdvisor on-line Help resource called Tool Database & Tool Inventory

Here is a the opening article of that category:

Quote:

An integral part of HSMAdvisor is its very powerful Tool and Cut Database also known as Tool Database

Tool Database allows you to not only store your tools in one convenient location sparing you the time needed to key-in your tool type, size etc.
It is very extensible and since its inception has grown both in size and functionality.

With every update the list of its features keeps growing and at present it can (among many other things) do the following:

  • Store and Edit geometric Tool data, Including automatic creation of tool data from a sample tool entry.
  • Store/Create/Manage Custom Tool Manufacturer Cutting data using Manufacturer Brand/Series names
  • Store and Manage Tool Handling data like: Number of Tools in stock, Ordering Vendor Information, Physical location in the shop
  • Set up Low Tool Stock warning levels and add tools, that are low on stock to a Request List to be ordered.
  • Create and Export customizable Tool Request Orders for use in purchasing.
  • Restock received tools into the Tool Database
  • Attach Cutting Data (Known as just "Cuts") to tools for various cutting scenarios in different materials.
  • Store complete MasterCAM Tool and ToolPath parameters for easy importing/Exporting of MC operations
  • Organize Tools into Libraries
  • Share a single Tool Database between many HSMAdvisor seats in real-time.

In the following articles we will describe the main functions of the Tool Database

In all there are 5 articles in there already describing many of its functions in detail.
Please check them out if you are not sure what the Tool Database does and how to use it.

And as always: when in doubt - ASK :)
