The New Help Category: Tool Database & Inventory

February 24, 2016, 10:41 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)
ToolDatabaseTabAnnotated.PNG

Being as vast and as complex as it is HSMAdvisor Tool Database may seem overwhelming for many users despite all the benefits of using it.

To address this issue I have just added a new category to our HSMAdvisor on-line Help resource called Tool Database & Tool Inventory

Here is a the opening article of that category:

Quote:

An integral part of HSMAdvisor is its very powerful Tool and Cut Database also known as Tool Database

Tool Database allows you to not only store your tools in one convenient location sparing you the time needed to key-in your tool type, size etc.
It is very extensible and since its inception has grown both in size and functionality.

With every update the list of its features keeps growing and at present it can (among many other things) do the following:

  • Store and Edit geometric Tool data, Including automatic creation of tool data from a sample tool entry.
  • Store/Create/Manage Custom Tool Manufacturer Cutting data using Manufacturer Brand/Series names
  • Store and Manage Tool Handling data like: Number of Tools in stock, Ordering Vendor Information, Physical location in the shop
  • Set up Low Tool Stock warning levels and add tools, that are low on stock to a Request List to be ordered.
  • Create and Export customizable Tool Request Orders for use in purchasing.
  • Restock received tools into the Tool Database
  • Attach Cutting Data (Known as just "Cuts") to tools for various cutting scenarios in different materials.
  • Store complete MasterCAM Tool and ToolPath parameters for easy importing/Exporting of MC operations
  • Organize Tools into Libraries
  • Share a single Tool Database between many HSMAdvisor seats in real-time.

In the following articles we will describe the main functions of the Tool Database

In all there are 5 articles in there already describing many of its functions in detail.
Please check them out if you are not sure what the Tool Database does and how to use it.

And as always: when in doubt - ASK :)

HSMAdvisor v1.217

February 15, 2016, 8:33 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)
DBStatusOK.png

We have just released a pretty important HSMAdvisor v1.217 update!

I strongly encourage everybody to go ahead and install it as it contains some big improvements.

What is new and improved in this update:

  • New Tool Database Status Indicator:
Status Bar Indicator showing whether the Database file is being written, up to date or if write has failed
  • A Warning now shows up when HSMAdvisor is closed with DB changes not saved.
  • Now you can not close HSMAdvisor until Database file has been written to the disk
  • A local backup copy of Shared database is now created on each computer for cases when connection is unavailable.
  • Fixed the problem when new Tools and Cuts were not added to the shared database
  • Fixed some (./,) locale-related problems.
  • Fixed the problem of some settings not being saved.

I would like to explain one new feature here - The Tool Data Base Status indicator:

On the status bar of HSMAdvisor screen you can now see The Tool Data Base Status indicator (later DB Status) icon.

It can right now show the 3 different states the Tool DB can be in.

These are:

  • - Status: OK
When Everything is fine you will see the all-green disk icon
  • - Status: Writing
When DB is being saved to the dist you will see this animated icon with one falling disk
You will not be able to close HSMAdvisor while writing process is going on.
  • - Status: Error
When HSMAdvisor was unable to save the latest changes, the icon will show red blinking or solid disks in it
If you try to shut down HSMAdvisor at this point you will be warned about loosing your changes and prompted to save your current Tool DB if you choose to go forward with closing it.

This is where you can find the DB Status Icon:

HSMAdvisor 1.214 Hook for MaserCAM x9

January 27, 2016, 8:39 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)
HSM_Rough_Pocket2.PNG

HSMAdvisor the Hook for MasterCAM x9 has had massive changes since the last update

  • Completely redone Operation Import/Export functionality
  • Added "Insert Operation" command (Add it to MasterCam toolbar through Customize->Toolbars->HSMADVISOR->select item, select toolbar-> Add..)
  • Reworked MC Toolbar Icons
  • Better tool Recognition
  • Added support for ALL milling (2d, 3d, HST) operations.
  • Fixed a huge number of problems including those with coolant, tool numbers and some unsupported operations.

HSMAdvisor hook for MasterCAM currently supports only MC x9.

Due to large amount of work I have done on x9 hook I decided to not port it to support x8. I simply have no time resources to do so. I only have one life you know!

Later versions of MasterCAM will, however, be fully supported.

Machinists Spoke and We Listened

HSMAv1.000_Load_Tool_DLG.PNG

Every month we are getting a good amount of feedback and suggestions.

Everything is getting prioritized and eventually implemented. Urgent stuff is getting done fast. And other "nice to haves" are getting pushed down according to their usefulness / difficulty (yes, everyone secretly wishes my program could also edit and create HSM g-code :)).

It is amazing, but almost half of HSMAdvisor's features were originally suggested by our loyal users!

The latest update HSMAdvisor 1.213 addresses some of the feedback I have received last couple of months.

So the New features are:

  1. Smart Depth and Width of Cut (DOC/WOC) suggestion (user suggested)
  2. Compressing of Shared Tool DataBases
  3. Display of Stock status on Tool DataBase tables (user suggested)
  4. Various little improvements like new Heli-Coil reference, better DOC/WOC calculation better multitasking, etc. (mostly based on user feedback)

Let's go over the most important ones here:

1. Smart(er) Depth and Width of Cut (DOC/WOC) suggestion

Default Depth and Width of Cut (DOC/WOC) are now suggested according to the available machine Horse Power.
The way it works is: If Cut exceeds the available HP, the calculator recalculates the recommended DOC/WOC until the estimated HP falls below the Machine HP.

You can see how default DOC was recalculated to account for little 1.5 HP Tormach spindle.

Now this feature at times produces somewhat unintentional consequence: if you drag the performance slider to the left, it decreases the Chipload, but that causes HP limit to change and it may actually suggest larger DOC - contrary to the function of the Performance Slider, which is supposed to decrease DOC in this situation....

I will wait for some feedback on this feature and see which way i should refine this behaviour.

2. Compressing of Shared Tool Data Bases

When working on MasterCAM hook i noticed that when i save MC operations within HSMA database its size grows exponentionally.

It testing I quickly went over "comfortable" 10MB size. Thus i decided that Shared Tool Data Bases will be compressed as they are written to the disk. This will make sure files are written promptly and network resources are used better.

The same 10 MB file was compressed to just over 100 kB!

Don't know why i have not thought of it sooner!

Now there is a catch: You will not be able to open a shared database in HSMAdvisor version prior to 1.213
If for whatever reason you need to do so, save your databases with "Shared" flag off in settings

3. Display of Stock status on Tool Data Base tables

This one is simple.

There is now a new column to the Tool Database table that shows the current stock status of each displayed tool.

Good stock is green, Red means Low, and Yellow means "on Request":

There were also other improvements not worthy of mentioning right now.....

Keep in touch for further updates!

Cheers!

HSMAdvisor v1.199

October 24, 2015, 9:54 am by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

This is update is the last one before a pretty big new additional feature being added to HSMAdvisor. So i cleaned up all the little glitches and made a lot of invisible to naked eye improvements.

Without going into detail i can tell you that those features normally cost users of other software products upwards of several hundred dollars, and they will not be without a cost to HSMAdvisor users too.

This feature will be optional and only those who need it will be able to purchase it as an add-on Later this feature will become a separate software product with HSMAdvisor add-on being just a small part of it.

Development of HSMAdvisor will continue as normal.

What is new and improved in this update:

  • Improved function of Tool Tables. Removed flickering. Faster Filtering and scrolling.
  • App Icon changed
  • Modified over 45 Degree Ramping Feedrates for milling.
  • Fixed Cloud Machine Upload

The. First. Ever. HSMAdvisor hook for MasterCAM X9

August 2, 2015, 7:06 pm by Eldar Gerfanov (Admin)

The First Ever HSMAdvisor Speed and Feed Wizard hook for MasterCAM has been released today for everybody to download for free.

Getting it to this stage has been a titanic effort for me and I am going to put a lot more of it in the coming months: i need to get it to pretty much perfect state before i start forgetting how i did all those things.

Because of this each update i release will extend trial period by 30 days.

This will last for as long as needed to finish the bulk of developing it.

At this moment the following toolpaths are fully recognized:

  • Face Mill
  • Contour
  • Pocket
  • Drilling
  • Circle Mill
  • All 2D HST Toolpaths:
    Dynamic Milling
    Dynamic Area
    Blend Mill
    Peel Mill

The only exception is: Coolant parameters are getting lost somewhere in the process. So please double check it before posting!

Things to be added in the coming days/weeks/months:

  1. Fix Coolant
  2. Engraving
  3. Other Circular Toolpaths such as ThreadMilling etc.
  4. Conventional and HST 3D Toolpahs
  5. Turning

If you have any suggestions or find any bugs please let me know.

I would like to reassure my current customers that HSMAdvisor Hook is/will be included with your license once this all is set and done.

Please help me with your suggestions/bug reports make this thing even better for all of you!

Here are the latest 2 videos i uploaded to my Youtube chanel

Setting up HSMAdvisor hook:

Calculating cutting parameters for Face Milling, Saving Tool and Cut data and recalling it when needed:

Cheers. And a huge "thank you" to everyone who has been supporting me!

HSMAdvisor v1.150 released

New and updated features

  • New workpiece materials
Cutlery stainless steels have been added
  • Better scaling and control positioning on "Speeds and Feeds" page
  • Tool Database page now displays Libraries in multiple rows, which makes it easier to find stuff.
  • HSMAdvisor now installs by default into "Program Files (x86)" folder
It will still copy data files into your "AppDataRoamingHSMAdvisor" folder. So it will still pick up your old tool library and license file.
  • HSMAdvisor.ZIP archive now does not contain installer files, but rather ready-to use application folders, which you can unpack and use without installation.

As usual check our downloads page to get the update.

Now i know you are wondering when i will release updates to the mobile versions as well.
That should (hopefully) be done by this Monday.

Cheers!
