Tool Torque?

Would you mind taking a moment to explain how tool torque is calculated? What does the "safety factor of 2" mean? :blink:

Hi,

Maximum torque a tool can take is calculated using a math formula based on its material and size.

Beacuase nobody knows the real number for their tools, I use a percentage representation.

And endmill will he able to handle 100% for sure because 200% represents the actual mathematical breaking pont of the endmill.

Thus the safety factor of 2 - when you set the limit at 100% it is still under half the maximum load it can take.

Why I use 200% as maximum? Because otherwise people would think it is OK to try to push their tools the the actual breaking point. This way 100% is considered safe and 200% is considered dangerous(very!)
Much like spindle load meter on your CNC goes to 150 or 200% but you still know that you probably should not be at 200 all the time:)

I personally set deflection limit at 100% and torque at 150% at my work.

Alright, that's really good to know! I've been keeping at 70% but knowing that now I don't see much reason to take it below 100% for general use.
